HHS girls soccer runner-up in District, falls in Region tournament

The Harpeth High School (HHS) girls soccer team came second in the District 11A Tournament on Oct. 12, falling to county rival Cheatham County Central High School (CCCHS) in extra time.

CCCHS hosted HHS for the district championships, and the first half of the game started off as a defensive battle of 0-0. Five minutes into the second half, HHS Junior Lily Lassard scored the first goal. CCCHS came back with two goals, but HHS Junior Mary McWilliams evened the playing field and secured extra time play by tying the game 2-2.

The Lady Indians ultimately fell to the Cubs when CCCHS scored two goals in both halves of extra time. Placing second in their district secured HHS a spot in the first round of the Region 6A Tournament on Oct. 17.

The team traveled to Martin, Tenn. to challenge Westview High School for a spot in the region championships, but ultimately lost by a score of 2-0.

“We had a great season,” Head Coach Lou Jenkins said. “The ladies put a lot of hard work into their season. I am proud of their progress.”

“I know the ladies are disappointed in the season being over,” he continued, adding, “Our Seniors did an outstanding leadership job and laid a foundation for years to come. They will be missed.”

The HHS girls soccer team last made an appearance at regionals in 2019, when Coach Lou was the assistant coach. In 2019, the Lady Indians made it all the way to sectionals – the tournament in which the winning team secures a ticket to state play – but ultimately fell to Adamsville High School by a score of 2-0.

The HHS soccer team has never had a State Tournament appearance in the program’s history.
