The South Cheatham County Library will conduct its annual Summer Reading Program June 12 through July 17 featuring a “Color Our World” theme. Rachel Zook, the library's assistant director, will be in charge of the activities, which, while focusing on actual readers, are open to children of all ages. “It can be from one and two years old to fourth graders,” Zook said.
The sessions are held on Thursdays at the library starting at 10:30 a.m., each lasting about an hour.
Here is the schedule:
June 12: Farmer Jason, music and silly songs. (Wear your favorite color day.)
June 19: Holiday. No program.
June 26: The Science Guys on the science of color.
July 3: The Country Music Hall of Fame on watercolor painting.
July 10: Magician Terry Hedges
July 17: Country Music Hall of Fame on stained glass craft. (Dress colorful day.)
On Aug. 7, program participants may bring in their completed summer reading log and receive prizes.
“For every five hours that they read, they can come and get a prize,” Zook explained. “They pick what they want to read — audiobooks, graphic novels, regular books, cook books, magazines — whatever they're reading.”
Those planning to participate in the program can get a head start now by stopping by the library and picking up art supplies and reading logs.
“We're giving out these little canvases,” said Zook. “They get to take them home and decorate them any way they want. Then we're going to have a display of all of them for the summer. We're going to have our own mini art gallery.”
In other library news:
On May 14, six people met with head librarian Jennifer Ensley to launch a Daytime Book Club. “No one person is going to pick the books to read — we're all going to,” said Ensley. After a book is chosen, club members will have a month to read it before discussing it. Sessions will be on the second Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m.
Twice a month on Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m., the library sponsors a Coffee and Chat for patrons and drop-ins. “We just have some goodies and coffee out,” said Zook. “They come in, meet people, talk and hang out.” The next such get-together will be May 27.
