Kingston Springs reallocates $20K for storm debris removal

The Kingston Springs Board of Commissioners during its Feb. 19 meeting unanimously approved transferring $20,000 from the town’s paving budget to its tree trimming line item to assist residents with storm debris removal in the aftermath of Winter Storm Fern.

The ice storm of late January left thousands in South Cheatham without power for up to 14 days. Both the town's of Kingston Springs and Pegram declared a state of emergency and the Cheatham County School District was closed for two weeks.

During the meeting, town officials noted that funds had already been allocated in the current budget but were originally designated for paving. According to town staff, the transfer was possible because the West Kingston Springs Road paving project came in under budget.

Officials emphasized the debris pickup will be limited to natural storm debris — such as tree limbs and brush — and will not include construction materials or treated wood.

If bids are secured quickly, town staff said contractors could begin debris collection as early as later this week. Residents can report brush piles through a JotForm available on the town’s website and social media pages. The town will also coordinate with volunteer groups that have already compiled lists of affected properties, as well as address debris in public rights-of-way.

The larger West Kingston Springs Road paving project is expected to begin once asphalt plants reopen, typically in late February or early March, depending on temperatures.

The Town of Pegram is expected to take up a similar discussion at its Feb. 23 meeting under an agenda item regarding storm debris cleanup and potential authorization to solicit bids or hire a contractor.
