Harpeth High implements weapons detection system to enhance campus safety

Harpeth High School began using a new weapons detection system on Tuesday, Oct. 22, as part of an effort to strengthen safety measures for students, staff and visitors.

The school announced that all individuals entering campus will now pass through free-standing scanners designed to detect weapons while allowing common items such as cell phones, coins and keys to pass through without triggering an alert.

Scanners have been installed in both the front and back lobbies. Each student will walk through the system individually along with their belongings. Before doing so, they must remove certain items from their backpacks and hand them to a staff member — including laptops, three-ring binders, glasses cases, metal cases, umbrellas and cosmetic mirrors.

Students who pass through the scanner without an alert will be permitted to proceed to class. If the scanner is triggered, the student will be directed to a separate area where staff may use a handheld wand or inspect their belongings further.

Visitors and students arriving later in the day must check in through the front office and go through the same screening process before entering the building.

In a message to families, Harpeth High officials acknowledged that there may be an adjustment period as students and staff adapt to the new procedures.

“We know there will be an adjustment period to the new procedures,” the school’s statement said. “However, we do expect the efficiency to improve rapidly, and we appreciate your patience.”

The addition of the detection system reflects a growing trend among schools nationwide adopting new security technology to maintain a safer learning environment.
