TLH Plumbing marks 10 year anniversary in Kingston Springs

TLH Plumbing aims to treat everyone like family. From their employees to their customers scattered across Middle Tennessee, husband and wife duo Gary, 34, and Kayla Harbin, 33, extend that “family feel” to each person they meet.

TLH Plumbing is marking its 10-year anniversary this March, having successfully served the Kingston Springs community’s plumbing needs for a decade. What began in the spring of 2015 with just Gary, two coworkers and a truck, has grown into an illustrious business with 24 employees, 12 trucks and four plumbing divisions that the crew specializes in.

“We've grown significantly,” Kayla said. “It's not easy. It's tough some days. The way we keep it family oriented, we keep a constant open line of communication with these guys.”

She continued, “We want people to like coming here. We don't want anybody to hate coming to work.”

“We've had a lot of plumbers come to us from other small plumbing companies, and they all come here and they love the atmosphere,” Kayla said. “When I say family feel, I mean we're able to joke with our guys one second and be goofy and funny and laugh, and then the next second, it's business and we're working. And they get that – everybody here is on the same page. I feel like that is a good chunk of why we keep a lot of our employees. Our turnover is not high.”

TLH has one employee who has been with the company since the beginning. It’s important to Gary and Kayla for that “family feel” to “feed off of our guys [and] onto our customers.”

“We like to make that known to them to give that same feel to the people that they're doing the work for and the services for,” Kayla said. “I don't know that that will ever change. I hope it never changes, and I'm going to do my best to make sure that that's always felt here.”

The “family feel” at TLH can be felt through every part of the company – down to the creation of its name. TLH stands for Tatum Leigh Harbin – Gary and Kayla’s first child that passed away at 6-months-old of spinal muscular atrophy (SMA). Tatum passed away just one month before TLH was launched in 2015.

“She had spinal muscular atrophy, which is a genetic disorder that Gary and I are both carriers for,” Kayla explained. “Every shirt we have made has that [SMA] ribbon.”

“Our guys know our story as well,” Kayla continued, “She's the reason for all this craziness and she's a huge part of why we keep building our business and why we keep it family oriented.”

Kayla and Gary are both originally from the middle Tennessee area, moving to Kingston Springs in elementary school. They graduated from Harpeth High School in 2009. Before joining Gary at TLH in 2018, Kayla worked as a pediatric nurse for six years.

Kayla and Gary now have two healthy daughters: Hope, 10, and Mia, 4.

When they attended Harpeth, the couple was very involved in the athletic program, and now their daughter is too. That’s why at every opportunity, they give back to the program.

“Gary and I were both in Harpeth athletics. I cheered all through school. Gary was in football all through school. We know what those types of sponsorships mean and how they've benefited us as a student and an athlete. We work hard to give back when we can,” Kayla said. From a donation for a sign on the softball fence to a donation for uniforms for a sports team, TLH enjoys helping to fill the need.

While TLH loves giving back to the schools’ sports programs, Gary and Kayla also encourage their employees to give back to the Kingston Springs community when they can.

“We want the community to know that we're here to provide a service, and our guys care, and we care,” Kayla said. “If we have a crew of people who are available, we're

going to fix whatever needs to be fixed.”

Gary and Kayla said the closeness of Kingston Springs inspires TLH  to keep the honesty and transparency at the forefront of all of their jobs.

Kayla said, “One of our company core values is WIT: Whatever It Takes. We train our guys to do just that, whatever it takes. No job’s too small. We have people in Kingston call us for a faucet dripping, and then we have people who say their whole basement has flooded. We're not going to ever turn anybody away and say that's not enough work for us. We have guys equipped to do any plumbing. We love the community, and we're going do what we can to pour into it as much as we can.”

As a business with a decade of success under their belts, TLH says their number one priority is to take care of their people.

“That's employees, that's customers, that's your vendors, that's everybody,” Kayla said. “Showing that you care about employees and customers, having honesty and follow through is so important.”

She continued, “If we say we're going to be there, we're going to be there. I think that is one thing that our customers appreciate, they don't have to worry that we're not going to show up.”
