The South Cheatham County Public Library's Summer Reading Program concluded July 17 and was declared as a success by head librarian Jennifer Ensley and assistant librarian Rachel Zook, who supervised the activity.
Ensley reported that 76 youngsters participated in the program and have so far turned in logs totaling 260 hours of reading activity. Participants are given a prize for each five hours of reading, Zook explained. Final logs are due by Aug. 7.
In addition to reading, participants were given small squares of canvas on which to create art work, and the results are now on display at the library.
The library feels it is busting at the seams as nearly 80 children and their parents pile in each week for programs like summer reading or story time. The library board has not provided an update on its plans for the new building it proposed on East Kingston Springs Road since March, but the Town of Pegram approved a $15,000 donation to help build the new library during its June meeting.
The Board will hold its next meeting in Kingston Springs on Tuesday, Sept. 16 at 3 p.m.
The library's Daytime Book Club, which started in May and has “six to seven” members, Ensley says, is currently discussing the Leif Enger novel I Cheerfully Refuse. Members meet the second Wednesday of each month at 10:30 a.m. The next book for discussion has not yet been chosen.
Ensley says the library has had a spending freeze since May 15 but that with a new budget opening July 1 book purchases have resumed. New titles will be announced in The Kingston Springs Gazette.
The library recently hired Dee Bryant as a part time assistant.
