Pegram mayor tapped to lead HHS football program

Harpeth High School has tapped Pegram Mayor Charles Morehead, 67, to serve as its new head football coach, following the retirement of longtime coach Doug Loope

Morehead, who has deep ties to the school’s football program, will step into the role after Loope’s remarkable 34-year tenure, which included 14 years as an assistant coach and 20 years as head coach.

Morehead, who previously served as an assistant coach at Harpeth from 1999 to 2004 and again this year, expressed his excitement for the opportunity. “I am very excited for this opportunity to become the next head football coach at Harpeth High School,” he said. “I want to thank Principal Dr. Lee Rector, Assistant Principal Shannon Schliwa and Athletic Director Ricky Woods for entrusting me with the school's football program.”

Acknowledging the challenge of following in Loope’s footsteps, Morehead shared his respect for his predecessor’s dedication. “Coach Loope’s shoes will be hard to fill. I want to thank him for his many years of service to the Harpeth football program,” he added.

In his new role, Morehead plans to continue the tradition of excellence that the Harpeth football program is known for. “My vision for the Harpeth program goes beyond victories on the scoreboard. I believe in fostering an environment where every player can grow as both an athlete and an individual, learning the values of hard work, accountability, and unity,” he said.

Morehead is no stranger to leadership, having served as the head football coach at Harpeth Middle School for seven years. In addition to his role at the high school, he currently teaches woodworking at Harpeth Middle School and has been serving as the mayor of Pegram on and off for the past 26 years.

Looking ahead, Morehead is eager to collaborate with the community to build the program. He said he is looking forward to working with the players, families and everyone involved to grow the program.
