Harpeth Middle School (HMS) principal Audra Williams announced on March 12 that she is stepping down from her leadership role.
Williams has served as the HMS principal since 2019, and has held a variety of positions since joining the Cheatham County School District 17 years ago in 2008.
Williams said she isn’t quite sure what she plans to do next, but that she wants to prioritize spending more time with her family.
"I have loved every minute of being here at HMS," Williams told the Gazette. "There's the HMS family – I'm a part of it, and always will be part of it. I was in the first eighth grade class here when it started in 1998 and I have never wanted to be a principal except for at this place. I've made some of the best memories in my educational career here."
She continued, "I feel at peace about leaving. It's been six awesome years. I'm ready to move forward with new opportunities, but I genuinely miss teaching. My hope would be to continue to serve in Cheatham County."
Williams said she announced her departure as principal three months early because she wants to be involved in training her replacement and creating a smooth transition for the school’s students and staff.
The district is currently accepting applications for the Harpeth Middle School principal position. As part of the interview process, the district said it plans to compile a selection committee composed of HMS stakeholders and district personnel. According to the job posting, the candidate must obtain the “appropriate endorsement” to secure the position.
“Our staff and parents will be represented in the decision making process, of course, along with the district,” Williams said. “I know they'll select the best person for all the diverse needs that we have here.”
Director of Schools Cathy Beck, who also announced her departure earlier this school year, said, “The search process for a new principal will begin immediately. We are committed to finding a leader who will continue the work Dr. Williams has started and who will bring their own unique strengths to Harpeth Middle School. We will keep the community informed throughout this process.”
Williams said that since 2019, she is most proud of HMS becoming a National Unified Champion School. She also stated that she was proud of the low turnover rate of the staff at the school.
"We've had longevity here at HMS with our staff, and that makes me proud that people want to be here, and we have one of the highest attendance rates in the county. As long time art teacher Mrs. Liz Austin said, 'You're in a great place.'"
Williams said she is also proud of the robust sports, clubs and fine arts programs that have been built at the middle school, giving every student "a place to belong." She also stated she was happy with how the school spirit and parent involvement has evolved during her six years leading HMS.
“We appreciate the leadership that Dr. Williams has provided at Harpeth Middle School for the past six years,” Beck said. “While we are saddened to see her depart, we are also incredibly grateful for the profound impact she has had at HMS and the greater community.”
Beck continued, “As we bid farewell to Dr. Williams, we extend our heartfelt gratitude for her years of service and wish her nothing but continued success in her future endeavors."
